Ghana Diaspora Engagement Policy

The document outlines the Diaspora Engagement Policy (DEP) of Ghana, which aims to create a comprehensive framework to engage the Ghanaian diaspora effectively. The DEP recognizes the significant contributions of the diaspora to the country's socio-economic development, including remittances, investments, and knowledge transfers. The policy seeks to formalize these contributions by enhancing the relationship between the diaspora and homeland through institutional capacity building and the promotion of cultural heritage and tourism. Additionally, the policy aims to create linkages between the second and third generation diaspora and Ghana, encouraging their involvement in national development. The DEP also addresses challenges faced by the African diaspora, particularly those related to visa and citizenship acquisition, and outlines strategies to integrate them into Ghanaian society. The policy is guided by both national and international protocols, and its successful implementation will require collaboration among various stakeholders, including government agencies, the private sector, and civil society organizations. The DEP is seen as a crucial step in harnessing the potential of the Ghanaian diaspora for the sustainable development of the country. Ɔbenfo Ọbádélé Kambon was instrumental in lobbying for the inclusion of provisions in the policy that would allow Black people of the historical diaspora to acquire Ghanaian citizenship. His efforts helped to ensure that this right was enshrined in the policy, facilitating the integration of the African diaspora into Ghanaian society.
